The mill can cut the logs at different angles, to give the wood a different appearance.  Wood flooring is either plainsawn, quartersawn, or riftsawn.

  • Plainsawn is the most common cut.  The boards contain more variation than the other two cuts because the grain patterns are more obvious.
  • Quartersawn wood is more expensive because quartersawing produces less wood per log.  Quartersawn wood twists and cups less and wears more evenly.  The boards have a different look than the plainsawn.
  • Riftsawn wood is similar to quartersawing, but the cut is made at a slightly different angle.

Next, you can determine if you have an interest in generally lighter or darker woods, keeping in mind there are several lighter woods that accept stain.

Do you want to achieve a specific color via a stain or would you like the inherent beauty and color of the wood to stand on its own?

We can create a unique look for your floor through custom stains and finishes.  The color possibilities are endless.
